A founding member of the oneworld alliance, American Airlines has its headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas, and its main hub at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. It was founded 1926 and began a commercial service in 1936, then merged with one of its major competitors, US Airways, in 2013. The airline also maintains hubs at a number of other US airports including JFK International Airport and LaGuardia Airport in New York, LAX, Miami International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, O'Hare Airport in Chicago, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Ronald Reagan Washington Airport and Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
American Airlines has the biggest fleet of any airline in the world, with over 900 Boeing, Airbus and Embraer planes in total. It flies to nearly 350 destinations, with Los Angeles, Frankfurt and Hong Kong being the most popular American Airlines Flights destination. The airline also has codeshare arrangements with a number of airlines, including Etihad Airways, Jetstar and WestJet, on top of its oneworld alliance membership.
Online check-in
Passengers can check in online for their American Airlines flight. This can be done 24 hours before their flight at the very earliest. Passengers can also check in 45 minutes before a domestic or 90 minutes before an international flight at the latest. To complete the online check-in, passengers will need their first name, last name and reservation reference number. Passengers on can also check in at the airport by simply going to an American Airlines check-in counter. The airline recommends that passengers check in at least 1 hour before an international flight and at least 45 minutes before a domestic (U.S.) flight.
Hand luggage allowance
Passengers on an American Airlines flight are entitled to 1 bag and 1 personal item as their hand luggage allowance. The personal item must be able to fit under the seat in front of the passenger. The main hand luggage bag is limited to no more than 23 x 36 x 56 cm in size. Changing bags for infants, mobility aids or medical devices will be carried free of charge without counting towards a passenger's hand luggage allowance. Luggage will be checked into the hold if it exceeds any of these limits, and in that case, a further charge may be applicable.
Checked baggage policy
On transatlantic, transpacific flights and flights to South America, 1 checked bag is free for all passengers, while Business class passengers are able to take 2 complimentary pieces of checked baggage, and First class passengers up to 3 pieces of checked luggage. Passengers on U.S. Domestic flights and flights to Central America or the Caribbean will need to pay extra for checked baggage. For all flights checked baggage is limited to 23 kg and a combined height, length and width of 158 cm. For First and Business class passengers, AAdvantage Executive Platinum and oneworld Emerald members, the limits are 32 kg and a combined length, height and width of 158 cm. Any baggage exceeding these limits of American Airlines flights will be subject to an extra fee.
