KLM Royal Dutch Airlines was founded in 1919 and has its headquarters in Amstelveen, close to its hub at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. A merger between Air France and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines took place in 2003, with the airlines agreeing to become subsidiaries whilst keeping their own brand identity. The company has a vast number of codeshare agreements with other airlines including Malaysia Airlines, Etihad Airways, Bangkok Airways, Aer Lingus and Olympic Air. Its fleet totals over 100 aircraft that fly to more than 130 destinations around the world.
KLM flights to and from locations around the world include the Canadian destinations of Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, as well as a number of Chinese destinations such as Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu. European routes include the Spanish cities of Barcelona, Madrid and Bilbao plus the Italian tourism hotspots of Rome, Florence and Milan.
Online check-in
Online check-in is available on KLM flights and passengers must enter their booking code or ticket number as well as their flight number. It is also possible to log-in online with an email address and password. Passengers can choose their seat or, for intercontinental flights leaving from Amsterdam, choose what they would like to eat from the menu.
Once the online check-in process has been completed, passengers will receive their ticket, which can then be printed out. Alternatively, the boarding pass can be saved on a mobile phone or tablet to be used instead of a paper ticket when at the airport.
Hand luggage allowance
Passengers traveling on KLM flights are allowed to take at least 1 piece of hand baggage with them on board. The exact amount of baggage depends on the type of ticket the passenger has purchased and the flight route. Hand baggage may not be larger than 55 x 35 x 25 cm.
Business class passengers may also bring an additional piece of hand luggage that must not be larger than 45 x 35 x 20 cm. Liquids can be taken on board but each container may not exceed 100 ml. All liquid containers have to be placed in a sealed plastic bag and the actual contents should total no more than 1 litre.
Checked baggage policy
The amount of checked baggage allowed on KLM flights depends on the type of ticket purchased and the route the passenger is flying. Most Economy class passengers are allowed to take 1 piece of checked baggage that weighs up to 23 kg, while Business class passengers are entitled to 2 pieces of luggage, each weighing up to 32 kg.
Children are allowed to take 1 item of checked baggage as long as it does not weigh more than 10 kg. Sporting equipment such as golf clubs, snowboards and skis can be transported as a replacement for a piece of checked baggage. All checked luggage should be labelled with the name and address of the passenger.
